WebM:
- Better for fast-moving content like high frame rate games or quick web animations
- Usually smaller in size
MP4:
- Supported on almost all platforms
- Not good for fast-moving content like high frame rate games or quick web animations
You can set the default recording format in the Options of our Chrome extension. If you report bugs, create regular educational videos, or record videos without fast-moving content such as high frame rate games or quick web animations, we recommend recording them directly in the MP4 format.
Note:
- Currently, when accessing the shareable link of a recording through Safari on iOS or iPad, the recording undergoes transcoding from WebM to MP4 before it can be viewed by the viewer. This transcoding process causes a delay before the recording is ready for playback. Until this issue is resolved, it is advised to opt for recording in the MP4 format to avoid this inconvenience.
- For some videos, directly recording in MP4 may result in better quality than converting from WebM.
- If the platform does not support playing a video in the WebM format, the video can be converted to MP4. Typically, the quality loss from converting is minimal.
